peel off seal from Legere reeds:FYI
Author: Hiroshi
Date:   1999-09-13 07:41

The day before yesterday two Legere reeds reached me. I was astonished its performance although it seems still lacks in complicated harmonics realized only by genuine cane. I found two thigs. FYI.
1)Peeling-off the seal sticked on the stock makes it sound beter. It seems to obstruct my inverted Bonade's two inside rails to sit correctly.
2)I found why Mr.Legere does not recommend sanding it.(Even cutting it of course.) I tried to change its profile by a cutter. The result:from the cutting surface random fiber tissues came out. Yes, I ruined one Legere reed.

Hiroshi-
What do mean by complicated harmonics? Do mean the overtones of the fundamental are not a pronounced as with other reeds? I have found that crystal mpc have this effect, giving them a more simple, and IMHO elegant sound. For this reason I have stayed with my Genusa, I presently prefer more overtones and less simplicity, although had I the bucks I'd sport both. Please, tell us more about the overtones/harmonic and reed/mpc relationship.

A Quick Way to Peel Off The Stickers

I personally like the idea that you can apply mild sterilization techniques to the Legere reed and get away with it. There are some added benefits for this, too.

I had a Legere reed that for some reason got rancid smelling. Ugh, big time turn off. So, I whipped out some household grade (3% or less concentration) hydrogen peroxide and cut it about 5:1 with lukewarm tap water in a small clean drinking glass. I dropped the offensive Legere reed into the solution and let it soak for about 30 minutes or so. The reed came out with absolutely no scent at all, but the label slipped right off the reed.

Stuart:I meant by complicated harmonics :
A tone of clarinet consists of Fourier series of tones,base,3rd,5th,7th,...(odd series). Roughly base tone governs the half of the volume. But besides those there are small vibrations to be added to the waves. If we measure our clarinet tones by Oscilo scope,we can see those small additions by the minute change of shape on the mountains and valleysl. Legere reed is good but I felt they are pure tone and not like tones emitted with natural canes with those small addition of vibrations.

Paul:I will apply your H2O2 sterilization method.

There are <b>significant</b> even partials in a clarinet's tone. It's been said that the clarinet had only odd partials - this is a misnomer. The odd partials are stronger, but by no means are the even ones absent.

 Odd/Even Overtones - An Opinion
Author: paul

I have to agree with Mark on this one, even if it's only an opinion.

The odd overtones are very obvious and make the clarinet the instrument that it is. Doubt if anyone would argue this point too much. However, and just an opinion, I believe that the light even overtones add (for lack of a better way to put it) "color" to the sound, a depth or richness to the produced tone.

Witness the difference between a square cut plastic beater of a student grade clarinet with a raw beginner and a finely and artistically created (wood or plastic) undercut pro grade clarinet in the hands of a master professional. Ditto for the entire rig from the mp/reed/lig, all the way to the bell. I believe that in the end, the goal is to produce faint but discernable even overtones to add richness and depth to the sound, usually achievable only through both many years of professional level work and with a finely crafted instrument.

Opinions, comments? What does everyone else think of this premise?

Paul - it's not a premise - it's fact. I used a program to record my clarinet & graph the sound. I used to have the GIF up on the site; I must have taken it down a while back.

I emailed Dee the relative amplitudes - Dee - still got that?

Jim Pyne, Professor at Ohio State in Columbus, OH, also did an analysis & published his figures on Klarinet - they showed higher amplitudes of even partials than I got, and Jim has much better equipment than I (I'm using toy mikes).

Ken - would it be possible for you to create wav or other high quality sound bites for me using your recording equipment? I'll run a quick spectrographic analysis on it (them - a sampling of different registers would be nice).

Mark -

It would have to be off LPs or CDs to cassette tape, unless you can tell me how to run the outputs into my SoundBlaster card and make something of equivalent quality. I'll work on it.

BTW, the Quote Text function doesn't seem to be working, maybe because I "up"graded to IE 5.0.

Best regards.

I run line output off my stereo directly into my Soundblaster, and then use the recording software they give me (Wave Studio) to record to a wav file. 16 bit 44Khz sampling is "good enough" for what we need it for.

I've been running IE 5.0 since the day it came out of beta - "Quote Text" works. You've probably got the security settings on "High" - that disables Javascript, which runs the "Quote Text" function. I set www.sneezy.org as a trusted site, and set higher levels for others.

However, that involves more trust than one would think ... :^)

Sorry did not save it. It's one of those things that I read and dispose of. I'm trying to keep from getting buried in computer files, paper files, and other data.
