Pictures of Marcellus?
Author: Ralph G
Date: 2003-01-24 13:56

As long as I've admired Marcellus, I've never even seen a picture of the man. Does anybody know where I might find one? An image search on Google turned up nothing (though I did find a group pic with Greg Smith and the Brannens at an NU memorial concert for Marcellus).

Thanks.e

If you belong to the ICA, several back issues of The Clarinet had in depth interviews, articles and remembrances of Robert Marcellus...GBK

There was also an issue quite a few years ago about him with a picture on the cover.

While we are at it, is there a good biography of Marcellus on the internet? If there is, I can't seem to find it.

While searching for a photo, I discovered an interesting interview with Robert Marcellus at:

If you click on the "Orchestra" link at the bottom of the first link Frank posted, it'll take you to a page with a shot of the orchestra and several mug shots beneath it. Judging by the file name, this is another pic of Marcellus:

This is a neat posted shot of the whole orchestra (warning: 344 KB):

Wow, the Cleveland Orchestra, Szell and Marcellus in their prime! Who among us doesn't dream of being in this ensemble at this time?

Something about that shot makes me think of the '61 Yankees, the Big Red Machine of the mid-70s, the '88 Fighting Irish -- the ultimate team where everybody makes a vital contribution.

BTW, the library at the college where I work now has the CD set of all Beethoven's symphonies played by Cleveland. You can bet I checked it out as soon as I found out yesterday. And you can bet I'm gonna buy my own set!

Hi Madvax:
Great Marcellus link! Thanks.
I remember Bob very well, and the interview reminds me of how charming and honest he was.
Thanks for the memories.

Who were the other principal wind players during the time Marcellus was there?

I am not sure I want to equate Marcellus with the Yankees or a sports team. His playing was is a league of its own for sure, but from what I gather he was very down to earth and disliked hype.

Check the interesting quotes in the above Marcellus interview on the St. mathew Passion. Quite hilarious!!

All the best
D Dow
