 expressive playing

Whenever I listen to my favourite recordings of singers and instrumentalists, I'm always impressed by how expressive they sound. What is the most expressive clarinet recording you have heard?

That's a tricky question!, especially to try and narrow it down to just one recording...
One that comes to my mind almost straight away is the clarinet solo in the first of the Hungarian Sketches by Bela Bartok. Played by Larry Combs of the Chicago Symphony, conducted by Sir Georg Solti. (recorded in 1993')

I'm sure I could think of plenty more if I spent some time thinking about it though!

While I prefer playing and listening to classical, on this question I'd have to vote for Artie Shaw playing his Concerto for Clarinet.

Brahms Quintet Leister with the Amadeus Quartet(be sure not to get the later records which he did with another group>)

The Richard Strauss Duet Concertino with Manfred WeiseEMI and Kempe with Statskappelle Dresden. Nice record!

Read my posting on the recent thread, "Verdi question", concerning Ricardo Morales:

Hands down for me, Herseth playing the 5-note opening quote on Ives' "Unanswered Question" (Where_did_I_come_from?) ... Sorry Mr. and Mrs. Clarinet. <;^|

--LOL, I agree, it's painful enough on Woodwind.org (Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon and, er "French" Horn ... they hate it when you call it that) we must endure discussions about the SAXOPHONE. Who's the wise guy anyway who decided a saxophone is a woodwind instrument anyway? Everyone knows, you need a handle and pull chain to start a buzz saw ... thanks Percy!

Just kidding folks. <;-)

Usually David Shifrin playing anything. I remember not being able to get enough of his recording of Bernard Herrman's Sounvenirs de Voyage for Clarinet and String Quartet.
I also remember hearding Dick Stolzman do a dress rehearsal with New Haven of the Copland and I've never heard the opening done better.

Try the slow movement of the Clarinet Trio of Brahms with Alfred Prinz, the way he floats his sound is truly unbelievable!!
