Which new( currently being made) Selmer Bb clarinets are "wide bore" instruments. Which are pro level? Am I better off looking for an older Series 9 or balanced or center tone instruments? Thanks!

Check the Selmer web site--they've got specs for all models in production. I think the only one that's really wide bore is the Bundy/1401 student clarinet.

I don't believe they use the Bundy designation any longer but I think Bryan is righ about the 1401. The 1401 is the current version of the old Bundy 577 (.577" bore diameter). The current Selmer 1400 (.590" bore diameter) was the Bundy 1400 aka Bundy Resonite-model 1400. I've heard that the original Bundy Resonite was modeled after the Selmer CT.

Sorry, it wasn't the CT but rather the earlier BT that the Bundy Resonite was modeled after.

If you look at Selmer's website, you'll discover that Selmer no longer makes a wide bore clarinet for the "profesional" level clarinettist. The Series 9 (not be confused with the 9*) was the last large bore instrument that they made. It's bore is/was a nominal .584". The Series 9* has/had a nominal bore diameter of .577" and is considered a small bore clarinet.

Super20Dan,

According to Ralph Morgan, the earliest Bundy's were manufactured with the same bore as the Balanced Tone clarinet. In fact, the wood Bundy with a low serial number is a fairly good performing clarinet. I'm not saying they play as well as your BT, just confirming that Richard's post has some merit.

"No it is not possible!"...
"My Mitsubishi outperforms any Chrysler!"

Take the same people, using the same tools, with the same materials...

when the bundy line was first introduced by selmer it was intended to be a inter. line not the low budget student line it is today. i played a signet from the 50,s for 20+ years and i think it was probably the same horn as the orig wood bundy .i would have to agree its a decent horn but still not on the same league as the BT (even if same bore)

According to a 1959 Bundy catalogue, the Bundy Greenadilla wood clarinets were identical to the Bundy Resonites except for the body material (ie. .590" straight bore). The Bundy intermediate line was the Signet (model 100, Special, and Soloist) and were all of .577" straight bore design.
