I really want to buy my self an "A" Clarinet sometime in the future. What are some good ones and expected prices?
I know this may be too general of a question, but lets see what comes up.

Hi ALOMA!
I just recently bought my professional A clarinet from Yamaha. It's a YCL-SEA. It plays very nicely and matches the sound of my Yamaha Bb amazingly. From what I've heard, Yamaha A's are the way to go. I got mine for $1500.

The B-Flat one I currently own is a Yamaha. I forgot what model it is, because I bought it several years ago when I first started and hardly knew anything. But it is a pretty good student clarinet for a fairly low price (5, 6 hundred i think). I am also considering a step up into an intermediate one, such as the Buffet E-11 which I can get for hardly anything higher than the same price as the one right now.
Since right now, I don't NEED an "A", it is not a sensible thing to get a pro model for 1500 bucks. In fact, I'm not really leaning toward buying one, I'm just finding out info.
Im just trying to decide if I should get a new intermediate step-up instrument, or a cheaper, used pro one. If I decide on the cheaper, used pro clarinet, I was just maybe thinking of making it an "A".

I dont mean to sound harsh or discouraging, BUT since you dont NEED an A clarinet. Then why purchase one at all. When you do, then perhaps you will have more money saved up for the instrument. Of course, if you get an inexpensive A clarinet now, then perhaps when you are ready, you will have money for a good B-flat, a prime necessity. I got my Pro A clarinet before my pro B-Flat, but then again, I really needed it when i purchased it. My A clarinet is a Leblanc Concerto, and my B-Flat is a Concerto II. Both great horns. Good luck!

Since you are searching for a teacher as well, I'd wait until you get that taken care of first. Once you do that, your teacher might have some suggestions, and even other suggestions regarding your current set up.

I think the conventional wisdom is to get one that matches the Bb. I own a couple and seldom play them but orchestral players use them all the time and there is plenty of solo repertoire.

By all means search the BB archives (click on the "Search" feature just above the reply blank at the bottom of the page) for "GBK Amati" (without the quote marks). He, owner of eleven Buffet Clarinets, has made some rather compelling comments about his Amati A Clarinet.
