I've recently repadded an old manual register bass. I think I've gotten all the leaks out. However, the middle C playes very flat compared to the C one octave above. The notes on either side of the middle C seem OK. Any recommendations?

Maybe the B/E pad needs to be raised.

Kurt, a little more info might help we answerers. By manual register keys, do you mean "individual" [2] high and low reg. keys [or a single]? Re: "middle C" do you mean below the staff, or 3rd space. R S's comment, I believe refers to the latter. The former would prob. require adjustment [greater opening] of the highest pad on the lower joint, also to better "vent" the above closed holes. Dave Spiegelthal will give you the best info! Don

Sounds like the E/B or if fitted Eb/Bb or both are sitting a bit low. This may affect C# and D also but not as much. Voicing larger carinets and cor anglais' is one of the hardest tasks of a repairer. Also double check the lower register vent, and indeed the upper, and remove any blockage; if it is a metal insert make sure it is round also this may help.

To clarify, the horn has two register keys, one high and one low. As for middle C, I mean the one below the staff.
With some experimentation, it seems that opening keys below the first closed one seems to make a difference in tone quality. I this true with only the first open hole below or with all. Is there some general theory to be observed here? I have a clarinet repair book, but it doesn't cover general theory and applies specifically to Bb's.
