 Concerto No.3
Author: fermata

Has anyone played Concerto No. 3 by Karl Stamitz? I am considering playing this piece for a state solo competition, and I am having a little trouble with the first movement, especially playing the 32nd notes near the end. Are there any tips you could give me on playing it?
Thank you

I played it my first semester as a music major. It's been 17 years, so my recollection is a bit foggy -- I haven't touched it since. But it's a cadenza, so you can be free with the tempo. Hold the fermata, stop, then begin the run slowly, more like eighth notes, then by the crescendo have them up to 16th note speed. By the mf you should be roaring along as fast as your technique will allow. At the end of the run, really punch out that octave E jump and make sure you emphasize the syncopation until you get to the last fermata. For the last run, take a breath after the fermata and slam it home to the trill.

My print has tonguing or slurring optional. I can't imagine tonguing this beast.

this piece is really easy to get sick of, IMHO.
