Out of sheer curiousity, I invested $7 in the VHS of W N B and did enjoy the turn-of-century Dixie, 3 ft. line, cl, tpt, tmb, backed by banjo, piano, s.bass and drums, much like my recollections of Preservation Hall, [with Wiley Humphrey on cl]! I was a bit surprised by Woody's facility and very-bright-piercing? tones on those nice OLD 12 bar,3 chord tunes. I was hoping for more than a few minutes at Buffet's [show-room]. All in all, it was an European Tour, [to me] ego-trip for him and Soon-Yi. See it, Don

Hi Peter, fine comments above. I have the [bad?] habit of ? unidentifiable-abbreviation, WMB= Wild Man Blues, Woody Allen's European Tour video back in the '80's. Out of print/stores now. I just went to EBAY, searched for WMB, bid on a brand-new VHS, no competition, $4 + $3 shipping, via jeogeo Pollard, V G service. I believe they have more of these, so give it a try. Luck, Don

Yeah, I saw that on TV a little while ago. I remember talking to Tony Scott, who met Woody on that tour and went to his concert in Rome. Woody held Tony in high regard, and they had a great picture taken together. Tony couldn't avoid commenting to me that Woody made $40,000 at that concert, while Tony, who is undeniably an incredibly better clarinettist, was very nearly broke. He also pointed out that Woody was playing the trumpet line (the melody line) pretty much the whole time, rather than the standard dixie-style clarinet line.

the CD of the same name is superb. It was not recorded at the concerts but back in New York. I like the attack that Allen has cultivated. It is really worth checking out. You can listen to some bits on Amazon.com

TKS, Charles, I didn't know of the CD, will try to find it. Interesting comments, Birch, yes W A's "choruses" were pretty much tpt line, he did some altissimo "rambling", not real great. As you pointed out in "Jazz Cl", Albert is best for the "old-timey" Dixie, very-bright [my old 2+2-ring Kohlert is that way!], it cuts thru! Will view it again and report on venues [the full-houses?] and tunes played. Glad y'all are interested. Nostalgia?? Don
