I am interested in the Yamaha YCL-SE. Does anyone know anything about this model and it's place in Yamaha's lineup of custom clarinets. I am interested in pop/swing/dixieland jazz and the SE bore size 14.78 mm is very similar to my old Leblanc LL mm at 14.80mm. Would it sound the same ? and be as free-blowing ?

I don't have direct experience of the SE but from a purely physical point of view I can tell you this.I have owned a Yam CS-V since May 2002 and it has proved to be a wonderful instrument to own and play. The build quality and finish is second to non as we have come to expect from Yamaha and the tone is both sweet and responsive I currently use this clarinet with a Pillinger mouthpiece and Vandy Optimum lig and V-12 3 reeds.Beautiful.

Hi! I play on a Yamaha SE-V, and I must say it is a fabulous instrument. From what I've heard from the Yamaha dealers, the SE model is more free-blowing that the CS. The CS tends to have a brighter sound (lets not get into that discussion again..:)), and the SE has a darker, rounder sound. The color of sound from the instrument is very nice and quality of workmanship very nice too. I believe the SE is just a step below the SE-V model in that it might not have metal tenon rings or something like that. Mine does. It also has a very cool cut out section in the bell that is supposed to make your sound resonate better, which is a neat idea. I don't know if this is standard on the SE's though. I really think the SE could wail on some jazz stuff!
Good luck in your search!
