Okay, so I'm back again with some more questions about my tryout music. I had asked before, but no one knew which edition of the Klose book I was talking about go me. Anyway, It's the big orange one.....think it mentioned Bellison....haha, how sad. But I don't have my book with me to tell you exactly. Well, one of my questions is on the exercise starting on page 146 entitled Rondo (#3). I can't tell if all of these dynamic marks over the dotted quarters that occur throughout the piece are small decrescendos or accents? How should I play, for example, the first line? And in line 4 measure 5, how should that be played exactly? How long should I trill the fermata? My band director suggested I breathe after than and before the next half of the measure, but that doesnt seem right to me.
The other question is on the exercise starting on page 183 #11. What is the tempo supposed to be for this exercise? I am playing it about Quarter note =60 right now. is that okay? I would really appreciate any help. thanks!

It sounds as if you have progressed to the point of where you need a private teacher - have you considered finding one in your area? Sorry I can't be of help specific to your questions. My Klose's aren't near me right now but you do sound very conscientious and this might be the time for some quality one-on-one instruction to help you improve even faster! Good Luck

As much as I would like to, I can't take lessons at the time being because I just have too much other stuff going on with college preparation and all, and besides, I can't really afford one either, especially in my senior year. Maybe when I get to college I'll take some lessons for fun, but I am not planning on playing clarinet for a career. This exercise is for all state auditions, which do every year, and it really does help me improve. It's that whole theory of if you practice harder stuff, it makes the other stuff seem easier. I don't know, not a wise philosophy, but my own.

1.
a) Yes, these are accents
b) It's really up to you how long to hold fermata but than finish the 5th measure. Without rushing take a breath and begin variation of the theme.
2. Play quarter note = around 50 or even slower. You don't want Adagio to sound like Polka.
