Hey there gang....
Just wondering if you've noticed the lower than usual prices for great horns on ebay recently? Seems the economy has reduced what people can afford to pay for Buffets, Leblancs, etc. A lot of the listings on ebay, go without bids at all. Are sellers asking too much? OR are we just hanging on to our money? Just curiouis what you think.

I think everything on Ebay is depressed these days. That is why I haven't sold anything on it for a LOOOOONG time. It is a buyer's market.
My two cents,
Jean

I follow the clarinets all the time and everything looks normal to me. I have noticed that people are less willing to bid on auctions with a reserve price. After the holiday season is a slow time in general.

John,
I noticed that too. Not only are the buyers backing off, but the sellers of quality horns too. There is quite a bit of garbage on eBay right now. Clarinets aren't the only thing being affected, saxophone, oboe, and mouthpieces too.

The US dollar is way down against the cross rates. If you are dealing with overseas buyers you will find that they have set their limit in their own currency. If the US dollar is down against that currency then correspondingly the high bids when realised in US dollars will go down. It is our turn now!

Vytas,
That eBay auction ended on November 20, 2002.
A search for R-13 shows little.

So? What's your point? The prices on eBay have been depressed for at least 3-4 moths now.
BTW, this clarinet is not even from 1955 and probably is not an R-13. Real R-13 were introduced 1955 and have serial numbers starting 50,000 also throat A & G# have separate posts on these instruments.

Vytas,
The 50,000 serial number is an estimate only. NO ONE, not even Buffet, knows for certain what serial number was the initial R-13.

Vytas,
I was expecting a current link.
I thought the last 3 or 4 months on eBay was a sellers market. I quess it depends on whether you are a buyer or seller. I still managed to buy 3 Bb , 1 Eb clarinet and 1 alto sax on eBay during that time period. I too wonder all the time if those used R-13s are really R-13s. The one in your link is the only one I've seen that had the proof in one of the pictures. Take a look at the pictures again.

If you were a first-time buyer, choosing between a new, Grey market instrument or an overhauled horn for a modicum in price - what would you choose?
eBay is a bargain hunter's realm.
Considering that very few instruments are offered on a trial basis, these buyers are clearly purchasing at a price-point.
Given the shaky condition of B&H, I would say that this is the time to buy!

I just sold a Buffet R-13 that I had hand-selected new at $300.00 under my cost. I paid $1,795.00 for it on Nov. 20th and and sold it on Christmas Day for $1,475.00 on eBay. And at that I had all kinds of emails from people wanting it for less. The prices are certainly depressed. And people are reluctant to buy right now.
But, as a seller on eBay for the last several years, I can tell you that things are always tight because everyone wants a good bargain. Otherwise they would go to their local music store and pay the full price for something.
I do it because I enjoy it. I've met lots of great people and have also been able to help many young and returning players and parents. Overall it's been a good experience.

1967-68 was a good year. There aren't many used R-13s on eBay now so John may do well.

Brenda,
The point is that an R-13 with no cracks, repairs or any damage to the wood and being sold by a professional musician did NOT sell because nobody wanted to pay more than $740. Is this qualify for "depressed prices" or what?

It seems fairly common on ebay for bidders to give up if there's a big gap between the starting price and the reserve price.

Very respectable off the shelf price on the R-13. Of course, it could easily be a dog. If it's a keeper add another $350 for a Branennizing and you'd have a nice piece.

Vytas,
The fact that he as a professional musician is reason to pay less not more for the clarinet. It may need an overhaul.

Yes, as I said--I just sold a new R-13 for $1,475.00 plus $15.00 shipping. Below my cost--but agreed the prices are very depressed and so am I.

It's NOT an R-13! This clarinet is an R-13, but NOT an R-13 you think it is. Sounds Crazy! But true!
