At the Mannes Clarinet Day, one of the Designated Victims played the Francaix Theme and Variation. Terrific piece, and the final variation is about as virtuosic as it gets.
For something impossibly difficult, I've heard the Francaix Concerto done very well with piano.

Horowitz Sonata - jazz based and written for Gervase de Peyer -stunner - maybe not as technically impossible as some but different in a melodic way. Slow movement exquisite. - Muh underplayed IMO.
