Thanks,

Watch the video.

(The clarinetist on the film version of "Fiddler" may have been the late John Denman) ...GBK

Long show - can be a bit slow depending on the company - some great music - try to keep smiling during the second half- most of the numbers are well known - last performance I did two years ago was (I think scored for strings, ?fl/picc, ob/cor, 2Bb's (one doubling bass),bassoon, 2tpts, trmbn,?horn, timps perc.

Clarinet parts not too demanding but at times alarmingly exposed - needs a bit of Kletzmer feel.

Go for it !

In a pinch, like GBK said, just rent the movie. Get familiar with the feel of the music and try to emulate it.

While Xmas shopping, my wife pointed to the DVD on the rack and said she'd always wanted to see it. What a great excuse for me to buy it! It's now in our collection.

Tradition!!!o

There has been extended discussion on the Klarinet board about the Fiddler On the Roof reed books. Click on the "Home" link at the top of this page, then on the "Search Klarinet Archives" link.

Best regards.

Hi Rob:
I did "Fiddler" long ago on Broadway and it's a ball to play!
More recently I did a revival of many of Jerome Robbins' shows called, "Jerome Robbins' Broadway."
In that revival we did the "Wedding Scene" from "Fiddler" with has the Klezmer solos mentioned above.
Buy or rent the CD and learn the solo Klezmer parts I played.
If you get into trouble, email me for my written out copy of the Klezmer solos. I was asked by the composer to transcribe my solos for the touring company, and I still have a copy around somewhere.
good luck and have fun,
JJM

Ralph,

With "i" "o" and "u" you'll round out the vowels and probably owe something to somebody ;^)

Perhaps your keys are sticking? I have the opposite trouble some times with my laptop. As hard as I push the key, nothing happens. AARGH!!

As to Fiddler on the Roof, former teacher of mine and regular poster Forest Aten is, I believe in the midst of rehearsals for a set of performances in the Dalls/Ft. Worth area soon. I suspect he will chime in when he gets a chance.

Good Luck one and all and a belated Happy New Year.

Brian Peterson

The parts are not difficult--but you can add a lot with some Klezmeresque style. The secret is in the joy of playing--it's a soul thing.

The latest national tour version has again been rescored to include Eb/Bb clarinet on one book and Bb/Bass clarinet on the other. The overture ends on altissimo A on the Eb clarinet; of course, with a fermata and in unison with the piccolo player next to you. The Friday night, 2 shows on Saturday, 2 on Sunday routine will really get to your lip, especially when you have to test reeds and warm-up in addition to the shows. And yes, there are other high A's as well. Rediculous scoring, even according the conductor. The solo cadenzas are really fun to play, and as previously mentioned above, quite exposed. Enjoy!

I played in the Fiddler pit, my senior year of High School. The parts arn't that hard, a lot of clarinet solo. The difficult in it is getting the feeling of. It's amazing music, very fun to play. Rent the movie, or the CD - enjoy !!

You can't ask for more great tunes in one play. I believe this is my all time #1 broadway production.

I reckon the wedding scene bottle dance solo is one of the most stylish pieces in the clarinet repertoire. What a buzz, night after night!

Just for kicks, I did a search and found this. Silly me, I had to look twice on the current board, then back to this thread to realize IT WAS POSTED A YEAR AGO (um, not today).

Anyhow, the Bottle Dance is my favorite clarinet piece to listen to. I have the CD to the movie soundtrack, and this guy sends chills up my spine every time I listen to him. :)

[ You were right - it gets edited out. :) Sorry. Mark C. ]

I love listening to it, and think it shouldn't be hard for me to play. Plus, if I ever have the opportunity to play the musical, I could then say, "Sure, I know it."

Hello Rob, I played in Fiddler in my senior year. One of the best broadway shows ever and the pieces I loved were "If I Were A Rich Man" (F Major)and "To Life" (C Minor). This is one fabulous production and you don't have to be Jewish to love it....Gee, sounds like a rye bread ad. Enjoy! Yikes, this is a old post!! Still love that music..

For what it's worth, Fiddler on the Roof is my favorite movie, followed by Lawrence of Arabia , and The Full Monty.

Might as well chime in too...

I subbed for one performance of Fiddler on the Roof last summer. Learned the music in about 2 hours and played the show with no rehearsal. It was one of the most stressful things I have ever done!!! But what a blast. Just make sure you can bend notes. I don't bend notes very well, so my klezmer solos weren't quite as "klezmery" as they could have been.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of the musicals on my list of musical I never want to see or play again (along side Bye bye Birdy and Annie).

The wedding dance is a huge clarinet solo. It's alot of fun to play and it demands a certain amount of flexibility to play. Playing clarinet in fiddler on the roof was the most fun I have ever had playing a musical. Have fun you will really enjoy it! :)

Speaking of answers:
I'd like to know from Rob Bell, the originator of this post, why he hasn't answered any of my emails. Perhaps he hasn't received them? I sent him all the "Klezmer" parts to FIDDLER, with my ornaments, and still don't know if he received them, or was able to use them, or whatever?
Just wondering?

We did this show here in Ketchikan last fall. I played bass clarinet, but I think there were only two actual BC numbers. Doubled on the Bb and also played most of the Cello parts (not many string players here). Not my favorite show, but a lot of fun.

There is no truth to the rumor that Bock and Harnock were being helped by Tennesse Williams, but fired him when he inisted on calling the musical "Fiddler on a Hot Tin Shtetl".

Why? Sorry, that's absurd, I do not have to justify the fact that I don't like a work. Period. Oh, yeah, there is another musical I hate as much as Fiddler on the Roof and that's Les Miserables (which I've conducted).

Of course you don't have to justify it. But it would be enlightening for others if you did. Your refusal just increases the mystery - how could a clarinetist so dislike a show that had one of the most significant clarinet parts of any show, interesting harmonies, a story of the timeless human issues of traditional versus radical, conflict, longing, love, dedication, passion.......

Did you have an unpleasant personal experience unrelated to the show itself? Do you have a dislike of augmented 2nds? Does the show's content drag up bad associations from your own life? Do you dislike things Jewish? are you just demonstrating the power of obstinacy over others......

Do you not wish others to understand you better, hence understand their own lives and environment better?

I'm not out to get at you. Just totally flummoxed!

Gordon - your inference that I have anti-semetic tendencies are anathema, and based on the fact that I also dislike Les Mis, I must be a Frankophobe ... totally untrue. I still maintain that justifying personal taste is a waste of time ... it would be like trying to convince someone why you like the taste of something ... it's purely personal. I do not like the genre particularly (of either work).

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

I spent almost two years as a vegetarian, and when asked (too often), "Do you not eat meat because you love little animals?" my reply was, "No, it's because I hate little vegetables."

But diz, I never told anybody their question was absurd. We're just not the same, eh? Good thing, because if we were, one of us would be unnecessary. And let's not have a vote about that right now, either. :)

Regards,
John

If there is ANYTHING in this life that I dislike I endeavour to understand why, and am quite happy to communicate this to others. Oh well, it takes all sorts.

But anybody who does not give an explanation following a polite enquiry leaves the field wide open for postulation and misunderstanding by others.
