 "Hot Fountain Pen"

Well, this is sort of about clarinets . . .

Are there any Adrian Rollini fans in the house? I **love** his bass sax playing, and he did a pretty good job on the novelty instruments as well. Anyway, does anyone know exactly what the "hot fountain pen" was? I know it was supposed to be like a small clarinet with a sax mouthpiece, but was there a specific manufacturer of these things? Was it possibly a Conn Clar-o-sax? I saw a picture and a description of one once, but I've never seen a pic of Rollini's "fountain pen," so I'm not sure if they are one and the same. Or, was it a toy or something he assembled on his own from different instrument parts?

Here is an early advertisement for it:

How interesting! Now if they only sold Rollini's talent in a box . . . ;-)

I wonder if these things ever pop up on eBay? Or maybe the occassional goofus? Did they ever sell the goofus commercially as well?

Well, I just answered my own question about the Goofus being sold commercially as I went to the site the hot fountain pen pic came from and there was also an ad for the goofus! (It came in a leatherette case, too . . . I guess so it would look nice for all those gigs one had to bring one's goofus to . . . )

Looks like the Adler Chalumeau I've seen at Lark In The Morning here in Seattle.

I'm sort of a fan of Adrian Rollini's. In fact, I recently purchased a database that has some of his music, discography and information for several of his bands, and biographies of many of the musicians who played with him.

(That would have been part of what would have bitten the dust if I had not been able to recover the hard drives in "Music 1.")

As far as the instrument in the ad, there are several people building similar items today. One who is very well known to me and an excellent "simple" (diatonic) instrument builder can be found at:
www.eriktheflutemaker.com.

He builds flutes, clarinets and saxophones (that are really clarinets, as they have cylindrical, as opposed to conical bores.) These all come in different keys and, if requested, tuned to "concert pitch" for a small additional fee.

He actually does a pretty good job on them and has several CDs out in which he plays the instruments he makes with a group playing "real" instruments and he sounds great doing it.

I can recommend Eric, as I have visited his shop every so often for many years (he usually builds my instruments while I'm sitting there talking to him) and have seen the care and expertise with which he plies his craft. I also own several of his instruments in my native instrument collection.

Another one who is supposed to have a pretty good reputation is a fellow named Zacchiah Blackburn, who I understand has a decent reputation, but aside from having exchanged e-mails with him a couple of years ago, I have no real knowledge of him. He can be reached at: www.sunreed.com

GBK: Is there anything you don't know about or know where to find information on? You're too much, my friend! (Do you happen to know what the next winning Florida Lotto number is going to be? Please e-mail it to me privately! You know the address!)

GBK: A heartfelt "you're too much" doesn't begin to tell it. I stand in awe. Chuck
