Oboist who wants to start doubling
Author: oboe_chris

Good afternoon

I am an oboe and cor player and would like to start doubling to play reed parts in local amateur musical theatre pits in the UK.

I would like to know where to start in terms of instrumentation and the quality of instrument that I should aim to purchase.

Many thanks in advance,
Chris

I've played over 100 shows. I would say to start with clarinet. I've found it's the most common WW instrument in the pit.

Buy the best one you can afford. I will say, though, that even a good student-level clarinet will serve you well while you're learning the instrument. I played a plastic Vito professionally for years before I bought a professional horn.

After that, you'd probably want to concentrate on flute, and then saxophone. Bassoon would come last in terms of what people ask for when hiring.

Having a good teacher for each horn goes without saying. Good luck.
