 I got lucky; in London Heathrow they use these little wooden frame things to assess the size of carry on baggage.  Upon entering security I was asked to put my bag in - being a smidgen [no more!] too long it wouldn't quite go but the friendly security guy said to me "that bag was about to go in there sir, wasn't it?", to which I rapidly nodded assent!
 
 Glad to see there's a bit of common sense still being applied at least.
