Some reed makers may be clipping one side of the reed shorter on purpose, but accidentally making one tip slightly thinner than the other, or having a more gradual blend between the tip and heart on one side. This may or may not be the side that is clipped shorter. The only way to know which side of the reed to play on is to try the reed on both sides, see which one works better for you, and play on that side.
