Re: rebuilding an embochure 20 years later

Take your time. I have been re-learning oboe for a little over a year after a long break. I played for a few years in jr/sr high school and quit in the late 90's, to take it up again in 2011. At first I played 3 or 4 days a week for 30 mins a day until my face got used to the embouchure again. Now I play almost every day for as long as I can get away with.

My muscle memory isn't what it used to be, nor reflexes. It takes time, and I still have a long way to go. Since I was self-taught I also had the whole idea of oboe playing wrong so re-learning the right way with lessons has been a challenge. But now it's really fun because playing is mainly for personal enrichment, with no pressure and no major "when I grow up" aspirations.
