I think the point ChrisM is making is don't use feathers that are dyed since you don't want to turn the inside of the oboe into a purple lollypop. Also don't use a feather that will loose particles---not sure how chicken feathers or hen feathers react with oil. Don't use feathers from any endangered species---you get bad vibes.
As to "only use bore oil"; not so. Back in 1700s and 1800s there was no bore oil or turkey feathers. Mineral oil is fine; my instructor used it all his life from 1900 to his death in the 1970s; I have used it since 1950s until not my death.
