One school I teach at uses "Jones Artist" reeds (the ones with the purple thread). They actually play quite well. They are machine made, but (unlike the red-threaded Jones) have a "v" tip, a heart, a spine and windows. I tried them and was quite pleased with them. They are easy blowing, have a nice round sound and provide stable pitch.
