I've seen Chris Redgate present his oboe at a conference, and while it is interesting for an oboist to see, I do generally agree with Andrew's comments above. To be fair to Chris, he did take the line that this would be an 'extra' oboe for professionals, to use alongside their regular oboe when playing contemporary repertoire.
What makes me a teensy bit cross is that I believe Chris got a shedload of money from the Arts & Humanities Research Council for this project. (And I would say that's why Howarths agreed to do it - because they got paid to do it.) As someone who works in higher education and knows how incredibly difficult these awards are to get, it does make me wonder a bit what they were thinking of. Presumably its 'industrial' / 'real-life' applications were attractive to the bean-counters.
