Are you sure that it is stiffness, and not that the tenon is too long for the socket? I would measure them both with a vernier calliper, before trying to force them together. Also check that the cork does not ride up and form a ridge against the wooden edge of the tenon.
Warm only the socket-side in your hands for at least a minute before you try and assemble - perhaps if the metal expands a fraction, the tenon will go in easily.
Also, try lanolin, it may help get the cork really silky smooth.
