I still have my clarinet from Jr High and High school (before a bad, read obnoxious, abusive, etc..., director turned me off of band). I got it about 30 years ago after I sat on my plastic Bundy permanently separating the two middle halves of the barrel :^O. It is wood, made by Jean Cartier (or at least that is the label imprinted on the case and instrument), and is in need of some new pads.
I have two questions: What, if anything is this instrument worth; and where can I get replacement pads?
Please reply to: molbol@ix.netcom.com
Thanks for any help.
EG

I saw a J C wood cl [with lots of wordage on it] at our local music store, got it up to playable, and it was a quite good oldie, but not worth more than $100-200 IMHO. I believe it is a "stencil" horn, Search the Phorum for previous talk, and maybe Mark C's info from Langwill. If you have no experience in repadding, I suggest you take it to a repair shop. Don

I've restored a few Jean Cartier clarinets --- a couple of "14-K" student models (very average in feel and playing qualities" and one "Professional 4-Star" (intermediate-to advanced clarinet, rather nice). There seem to be a fair number of these floating around, I don't know if they were stencil clarinets or if "Jean Cartier" was an actual manufacturer. I suspect they're not especially valuable, especially the 14-K models. I must say, though, that many of them seem to have these nice pastel art-deco cases............

I have a Jean Cartier bass. The technician who sold it to me said it was a stencil - claimed it was really a Buffet (ha!). Plays OK though - thoroughly overhauled - and was relatively inexpensive. It was what I wanted at the time - a bargain instrument to learn on. If you want to get back into music, by all means have your Cartie looked at. Putting it in playing condition may very well be a good choice to "get your feet wet" again.
