good morning
I have a 1995 Buffet RC Prestige bass clarinet which plays fine but has quite a bit of mechanical noise especially in the lower joint longer rod pad mechanisms. I see that there's some longitudinal play in the long rods to the lower pads which may be contributing to the rattles. All the screws are tight and fit well. I had an idea to dismantle and insert some thin felt washers to take up the slack. Be grateful for any thoughts - might this be a good idea or any other suggestions mightly welcome.
Thank you
John

I used a few washers I made out of a thin Teflon sheet for play on my Paperclip contrabass. I used a leather hole punch for it ID and OD.

thank you, that's even better. I did think perhaps the felt would gunk up with oil. Just bought some sheet from ebay and will give it a go.
many thanks

Just to report that Teflon washers on the long rod mechanisms works wonders - bit fiddly to cut and fit but no more rattles. Many thanks Mojo.

Those rods need at least some amount of play to work in different temperatures and humidity. The question is how much.
If it solved the problem than good, but FWIW...
Do you mean the rods can move side to side (lengthwise)? Assuming you do, it means they are loose both between the posts and on the pivot screws themselves (the latter is the much more important issue).
If they fit on the pivots but not between the posts, they shouldn't be so noisy anyway. If they are loose in both way, but washers are added, there are a couple of possibilities.
Either still some play between posts, no change to fit of the pivots, so noise might improve slightly, but that's where most of it usually comes from.
Or washers cause a tiny bit of binding, less than you might even notice, so this friction causes the hinge to not rattle much. This might be unnoticeable (depending on amount of friction) but it is preferable to repair the loose fit of the pivots.

thank you Clarinbass, this is really interesting. I've an old, very rattly alto clarinet (Selmer) and the rods move mightily side to side on the pivot screws when screwed up fully. As I rarely play the alto it's not really a problem but if you don't mind me asking - is there a DIY fix for this, replacement screws or a fix for worn internal diameter of the rods themselves??
