transposed clarinet part for Martinu Serenade anyone?
Author: rtaylor

Hi,

Does anyone happen to have a transposed part for the Martinu Serenade for 2 clarinets, violin, viola and cello H334?

The only edition I can find is from 1962 and the entire part is for C clarinet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's a beautiful piece. Hope you are able to find part. I tried sight reading it once, transposing. Very challenging. Have also read it on C clarinet - much better.

What I've always wondered is whether Martinu really wanted it played on the C clarinet or just never got around to transposing the parts. I agree that it is a great piece; and a major piece-long and meaty. I'm pretty good at transposing, but I don't like doing it in concerts. It means an added source of stress, which is something I can do without.

That is a good question, particularly as it pertains to 20th-century composers.
We know that in their scores, certain composers wrote every instrument in C, with the arrangement that the editor/publisher would to do the secretarial work of transposing the parts for transposing instruments.
I can think of at least one incident of a bass clarinet part being published in C without being transposed, where the composer had intended it to be for the standard Bb bass, the agreement being the editor would transpose the parts for the transposing instruments.

Simon: Prokofiev wrote everything in C. Villa-Lobos wrote for the C clarinet, but maybe it was a folk instrument in Brazil. There are pieces by other composers written for C clarinet. There is a trio by Martinu that I've played -reed trio (oboe-clarinet-bassoon? I can't remember) that was also for C clarinet. Two pieces written for C clarinet would lead one to believe this is not just negligence on the part of composer or publisher. Max Eschig, who I suppose was the publisher, was pretty slipshod.

Ruben, only Prokoviev's scores are notated in C. The parts are either A or Bb. The Martinu Trio is C clarinet. I inclined to think that it's the Bohemien tradition for using the C very much like Smetana and to a certain extent Dvorack used the C.

Peter: Thanks for the information. That just about answers it then, doesn't it? Would you, or do you personally play music that is presumably for the C clarinet on the the C clarinet? I don't have in mind Beethoven or Rossini, but rather parts that were written for the "modern" boehm instrument.
