 Legere/Vandoren bass clarinet reed strengths
Author: Micke Isotalo 2017

According to Legere's strength chart, the strengths of their bass clarinet reeds are equivalent to those of Vandoren. You who have played on both, do you agree? If not, what would the equivalent of a Vandoren #3 bass reed be from Legere - in your opinion?

Thanks in advance for you comments.

Much will depend on different individuals as well as different mouthpieces but I find the Legere 2.5s to be pretty close to 2.5 Vandoren V12s and 3.0 Rico Reserve Classic bass clarinet reeds.

Hi Micke,

I use a blue box Vandoren 3.0 as you do and the Legere Signature that comes closest for me is a 2.75.

I play both on bass clarinet (as well as many other brands), with a variety of mouthpieces, and find the strengths reasonably comparable. I typically use #4 Vandorens and Legeres (or higher strengths scraped down to the equivalent of about a #4 Vandoren). I recently got a #4-1/2 Legere and had to scrape it down somewhat to make it play comfortably.

I have a Grabner CX_BS bass mouthpiece (customized Selmer C*) and Legere #3 or #3.5 seem to work very well. And a big advantage is, they tend to last FOREVER compared with the typical cane reed. FWIW, my bass is a Buffet Prestigue 1193-2 low C instrument.

Zenia: How are the V12 bass reeds compared to the regular "blue box" reeds? On the reeds for soprano clarinet there is a difference in strength (between the same number), but how are the bass reeds - and how do the V12 perform otherwise compared to the regular ones?

Eric V: I haven't seen the Legere Signature reeds for bass clarinet, but only the "common" ones. Where did you get yours?

Hi Micke,

I just went and looked and it is indeed a regular Legere and not a Signature. Sorry for the bad info!

Micke: the V12's vs Blue Box, for me, are the same type of differences I find between the soprano clarinet reeds. It's really a matter of personal choice and after trying both on bass my preference between the two is the V 12. But you really need to experiment because so much is dependent on mouthpiece and on the horn you're using. I have a Buffet with the much greater angled neck which I really like. I was able to acquire a used Brad Behn mouthpiece and the combination for me was like night and day as compared to the sax-like angled neck.

Having said the above I actually prefer the Rico Reserve Classic bass reeds to either of the V.D.s. About a half strength softer so instead of a 2.5 VD I mostly is 3.0 or even 3.0+ in the RRCs.

I also carry and use Legere bass reeds whenever necessary: outside, tired chops, quick switch during a rehearsal/gig and like them as well. I don't think we'll ever see a bass Signature reed from Legere simply because of demand when compared to soprano clarinet and sax reed sales. I tried a tenor sax legere but found it pretty thin and just not as nice as the regular Legere.
