 Looking For Fingering Advice...
Author: Johnny Galaga

Trilling from clarion Ab to Bb...is there an easy way to do it, or do we just have to grind it out and use the right-bottom sidekey?

And slurring from clarion Eb up one octave to altissimo Eb...is there an easier way than the standard fingerings?

Thanks.

Trill Ab to Bb by fingering Ab, then trilling the index finger like you're fingering an Altissimo F. The Bb will come out rather nicely, depending on the horn.

Try "half-holing" the alt Eb with your index finger and using the r-h third finger instead of the usual "forked" fingering.

Thanks, the Ab trill works good.

I don't understand the other one though (William). What is the "alt Eb" and is that with the left or right index finger? Do I assume "r-h" means right hand?

Thanks.

I'm not certain what William meant by "alt Eb" either. But try just playing altissimo Eb with the left hand index finger either open or half-holed and with the right hand ring finger (3rd tone hole) covered and the right hand Eb/Ab pinky key open instead of the more usual right hand 1st hole-sliver key-Ab/Eb (more awkward to get to) or the less-in-tune right hand 2nd hole.

Eb5 - Eb6: TR OXX | OOX Ab/Eb

I'd recommend a more radical solution. Using the LH Ab key INSTEAD of the register key sharpens all fingerings above top C. Then you can use RH OXO Ab/Eb.

If it's TOO sharp, close LH1.

There are many fingerings like this; eg, for top D:

T+Ab OXX | XOX Ab/Eb or T+Ab XXX | XOX Ab/Eb

I use Tony's idea a lot - adding the LH throat Ab key on altissimo notes (especially high F).
One can also modify altissimo fingerings to include throat Ab to produce arguably better-resonating high notes. For example in the Copland Concerto, the high Es can be flat or resistant on some Bb clarinets. To produce a better-resonating fingering for a high E, exchange the RH Eb key for the LH throat Ab and L1 (ie. Octave key, T+Ab XXX|000, in other words a clarion G with throat Ab).
The slurs to high E in the Copland are easier and more graceful with this modified fingering in my opinion.
