Where to buy a decent Chalumeau?

Interested in picking this thing up. I've seen one made buy "Heritage Music" for $70. Don't know how good of a brand that one is, but it's one of the few I've seen.

I'm sure the R. Tutz in Austria has handmade instruments at various pitches. I bought my baroque flute from him and have been really happy with the product and service. www.tutz.at/ is his site but at the moment his server seems to be down.

Another site worth looking at is the early music shop in London as their catalogue is quite extensive so is great for getting an idea what brands are out there. They have some moeck chalumeaus

Hope this helps get you started in your search.

Just noticed this:

I ain't forking out nearly £30 for a chipped reed!

The opinions I express are my own.

Last thing i heard Moeck weren't making the Chalumeau anymore so this website may be out of date (or my information is out of date). The reeds i got with my chalumeau were just german system B flat reeds cut short (the logo on the back side of the reed was cut in half, but i remember they were Glotin German cut reeds).... certainly not worth 30 pounds at any rate...

Moeck chalumeaux were made by Otto Steinkopf in the 1960s. They were unbelievably crude -- he didn't even trim off the splinters in the bore after he drilled the tone holes. Avoid them like the plague.

There are serious makers. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalumeau, http://earlymusichicago.org/businesses_chalumeau.htm.

Remember that a reproduction chalumeau probably will not be at A-440, so you'll need to find other people who have the equipment and interest to play at, say, A-430.

Andreas Schöni in Switzerland makes excellent Chalumeaux. Here's his website:
