The piece was written for a consortium of three wind quintets; my quintet, the Dakota Wind Quintet, was one of them. The ending portion is a decription of a traditional New Orleans funeral; first, you mourn the loss of your loved one, then you celebrate their life. The beginning is a bit more esoteric. I see it as a description of the marshes/swamps in the areas around the city. The key to the opening, in my experience, is to shape the fast runs, and not make them too heavy.
