IMSLP quartets for cl & string trio
Author: Simon Aldrich
Date:   2010-04-27 23:35

Ken Shaw wrote that IMSLP is "An invaluable resource, though of course it has only public domain editions."

IMSLP is indeed a great resource.
One instrumental combination I am surprised not to see more of on IMSLP is clarinet and string trio (vln, vla and vcl).
In his invaluable book The Clarinet in the Classical Period, Albert Rice mentions there were close to 300 quartets for clarinet and string trio written in the Classical period. (Quintets for cl and string quartet were a rare combination in that period, with only 16 works written, Mozart's being the first.)
One would expect (and hope) to find more scans of the various quartets for cl and strs put up on the internet.
By the way my search for the three quartets of Cesare Pugni for cl & str trio led me here:
http://www.adrianoamore.it/free.html
but the high-quality scans are not downloadable.
Does anyone have a solution for downloading or saving these scans?

Thanks,

Simon,

Which pdf in particular couldn't you save? I just tried and they seem to download just fine.

The three Pugni pieces aren't pdfs for download, they open in some kind of viewer where the "download" button doesn't work.

You can also find a wealth of pdf files for clarinet and string trio at the Clarinet Institute web site: www.clarinetinstitute.com

Oh yes, you're right. I hadn't tried those pieces. What a weird site!

Brahms23 mentioned the clarinet institute site. This is also a wonderful resource, particularly for the Romantic period.
The clarinet institute's section "chamber music without piano" reflects what I have noticed elsewhere on the internet. Quintet (cl/strs) scans are readily available on the internet but not quartet (cl/strs) scans. The Institute's section contains 3 quartets for cl and strings and a dozen quintets for clarinet and strings.
I suspect the scarcity of scans of Classical-era quartets for cl & strs must be because when the quintet replaced the quartet as the more popular combination, music printing was developing as well. More quintets were published, perhaps by bigger publishing houses, and more of the quintets survive today in published form to be scanned and put up on the internet. Just a theory.
On the Institute's site, aside from the Mozart Quintet all the quintets are from the Romantic period. On the same site they list 4 quartets for cl/strs, two are Classical-era, the third (Respighi) I suspect is an arrangement and the 4th (Rabl) is erroneously listed (it is for cl,vln, vcl and pno).
(NB This is not a criticism of the Clarinet Institute's site. Just a general observation on the dearth of Classical-era quartets after spending many hours hunting down quartets on the internet.)

If a grad student is looking for a doctoral subject, the classical-era quartet for cl/strs sounds like a good one!

Simon,
You must have an account of some sort. If you click on the Key symbol in the upper left hand corner, it takes you to a log in dialogue. I have no idea how to go about getting an account.
