Thanks for your kind words, Liquorice:
If any of you are actually interested, the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB), has finally listed about half of my movies done over the past 30 years.
If you check this link, it should help with the movie titles:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0608585/
On my website, I've listed most of the movies, but no links to them. Also, the LINKS section of my site has many of the commercial recordings I've done with some pretty neat soloists.

Enjoy!

That's quite an impressive list! Maybe this is a question for a new thread, but how does one get into the movie recording business on clarinet?

First of all, it's mostly about being good. Then, it's being in the right place at the right time and "who you know" and "who know's of you". After that, it's all about reputation--and if you look up that word in the music recording industries clarinetist's dictionary, it will simply say, "JJM from NYC".

Hi All:
First of all, congrats to David for his heart bypass surgery recovery, Bravo!
And, no, your cousin hasn't called yet, but send my name her way, OK?
There are a few movie contractors here in NYC, more in LA.
They know me, yes, by reputation, but also as friends and colleagues on other jobs, and for many years.
The idea of "walking into a movie recording studio" in NYC, or even LA, as an unknown, is highly unlikely.
The primary prerequisites are reputation and ability. There are many small-budget movie dates that are lower paying and easier to get hired to play, but a good recommendation also helps.
Much of the great days of movie soundtrack recordings in NYC and LA, are all but gone now. It is being done elsewhere, like Prague and other cities in Europe. We still do movies like: "The Informant!" 2009 in NYC, scored by Marvin Hamlisch (but he's an old friend!) and Phil Glass still prefers to record here because he lives & works in NYC, and knows that we can best perform his difficult scores (see Glass movies 2010).
So my friends, is live movie music dead? Certainly not! It's even being re-used like my clip from the "Avatar" spoof! More fun from YouTube to follow.
Cheers!

I mainly agree with John about how one can get involved in recording work, especially for motion pictures. My one disagreement would be about the state of work in the US- we are still very active in Los Angeles recording motion picture scores. And as John stated, there are many low budget projects that do record here in LA and NYC. We still have 3 sound stages here in LA to record large orchestras in. I just finished working on the scores for Alice in Wonderland, and Cats and Dogs 2. One thing not mentioned yet is versatility-
Doubling is sometimes still required, I needed the following instruments:
piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, Eb contra, Bb contra, alto sax and baritone sax. And John, we even recorded one track for The Informant here in LA, with Steve Tyrell singing with a big band!

Hi nosqueaks (good name for a doubler!):
I'm glad to hear movie work is picking up in LA, it hasn't yet happened here in NYC, but we've struck gold with the new video game soundtracks, so things are good.
Yes, I'm glad you mentioned the doubles, they are so important to keep up for most of our commercial work & Broadway. I play lots of legit solo & first clarinet stuff here, but most often need my other horns for the commercial work.
We probably have a zillion friends in common from LA to NYC?
Keep those movies rolling in, stay well,
JJM

John, she casted Spiderman and a bunch of other things in NYC (law & order, etc).
There's probably somebody completely different for the musical contracting.
Harry Griggs did the NBC Sunday Today Show Entertainment bookings for many years. (my father-in-law who died 5 years ago).
