I am looking to purchase a clarinet with this stamp on it. I did a search and I got nothing. Anyone know this clarinet?

Hi Dave, I also looked in our BBoard archives, no postings. I once had a P Girard ALTO clarinet, fairly good, double register keying, unusual but OK ! You might try a Google search and perhaps find some postings on auction sites , or in museums, private seller sites etc. We have several posters from FR and GB, where P G's were prob. more common. May look a bit out of curiousity. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

That must be it... I haven't seen the instrument yet. It's an alto and the price seems good. Still seems odd that there isn't much info available... Google here I come.

Google was no help. Seems that no one knows anything about this brand.

Dave, to me its not a brand, its a "stencil", actually mfrgd by a lesser known maker such as Malerne [FR] and Schreiber [DE], and name-added sold to the US etc as Gerard, See Mark's post re: lookup in Langwill. Don

Yeah, I saw Mark's post, but I don't get it. Is Langwill some sort of book? That the instrument is a stencil makes sense to a point. But why would someone want to stencil an even more obscure name on an instrument? If Schreiber is lesser known, then surely adding a name like Gerard would be a move in the wrong direction, no?

Dave, Mark and GBK can give you the best info re: Langwill"s [big] book of mfgrs and instruments, its the most comprehensive index, I've ever heard about. Others can give you more info re: the "stencilling" practices of the {post-war] marketing of ?at least? our chosen insts, of the '40's thru 60+? period, I'm only an observer, still interested tho. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
