 La Margus Clarinet?
Author: Kontra

Was at a local pawn shop today and saw a Paris La Margus (?) clarinet. I think thats what it was called. Any info on this brand? Ive never heard of it. I'm pretty sure it was plastic, or maybe even hard rubber. It was hard to tell, it had seen better days. He had it priced at $199.

Could have been "La Margue" -- I've restored one such clarinet (it was pretty good) and one such oboe (ditto).

It looked like if it was restored it would be a nice clarinet to play, but looks aren't everything I guess. Do you know what they usually make their clarinets out of?

Hard rubber usually (if not always) developes a slight greenish tinge over the years, depending on exposure to sunlight mostly. When you rub it firmly with a finger, it smells like burnt rubber if you stick your nose close to the surface.

IMO you could buy one like it, if not identical, on 'the online auction site' for $50 or less.

I'm one of many who believe a well-built hard rubber horn sounds as good (sometimes better!) as its grenadilla siblings.

Are these made by Malerne? And do the top joints have a nickel silver bore lining?

Try searching for "La Marque". There have been a few threads about these on here in the past. According to Vytas they were made by SML....
