Barrels are made from different types of wood and different makes have different bore sizes and configurations as well as lengths of course. Some are reverse bores and some are not. The way the bore is cut has a large influence in the barrels tone and intonation. Some can make the tone more or less focused, especially in the throat tones and altissimo registers and can make one register sharper or flatter and of course the woods make a difference in the tone quality, as does the bore. Larger bore, smaller bore, reverse bore, larger on top, smaller on top, how it tapers from the top to the bottom all make a difference.
The famous English clarinet of the past, Jack Brymer, says in his book "Clarinet" the he considers the barrel to be more part of the mouthpiece then the clarinet, I agree in terms of how it effects the tone and intonation. Hope this helps. ESP
