Looking for the thinest smallest single case
Author: Tom Puwalski
Date:   2011-03-04 12:08

I am looking for the smallest, thinest single clarinet case available. I am doing more travel than I used to and if I had a thin clarinet case I could fit into the lid of my porter case ( the best carry on case ever made!)

Thanks Tom Puwalski. Author of The Clarinetists Guide to Klezmer, More Klezmer Gig Tunes and a Backun Performing Artist

Yamaha pro/Custom single case seems to be the thinnest on the market.

Tom -

Bass Bags says its case is the smallest on the market. http://www.bassbags.co.uk/shop/3_4/woodwind_instrument_cases/clarinet_cases/compact_single_clarinet_case.htm.

If you're willing to use a fleece-lined bag, I think Cavallaro will make one to your measurements. They make rolls for a baroque oboe d'amore that might fit. http://www.cavallarocasecovers.com/

I have a baroque oboe by Joel Robinson, which he supplied in a thick cloth divided bag. He makes classical clarinets, for which I'm sure he supplies the same design. His wife makes curtals and bassoons. You might contact him for advice. http://www.robinsonwoodwinds.com/index.html

Most makers of baroque instruments supply a fleece or corduroy bag. Any dressmaker could make one with the material at
http://www.zellertheseller.com/products/Musical-Instruments-Fleece-Fabric-By-the-Yard.html. You might also take the material to a luggage repair or shoe repair shop, which have heavy-duty sewing machines.

Or you could just put the joints in heavy knee-length socks and roll them in bubble wrap or fleece.

The yamaha student clarinet case is smaller than a lunch box. It comes with the plastic models, but you can buy it separately for very little.

Duck tape and bubble wrap is great but this is my carry one and the first thing these TSA guys do is untape anythings that's taped. fed ex bags are better but I think I can devise a more elegant solution.

Maybe it's time for the Backun Ultra-Slim case.

The Buffet Tosca single case is one of the smallest I've seen.

They're expensive for what they are.

I just picked up a couple of these, they are very slim, I love them. I don't know if these particular ones are seconds or what because they are priced really low right now:

I also have one of these Protec cases that are designed to fit inside
the outer pocket of their sax case. It's very slim and has no outer pockets like the usual Protec:

And then there's the basic Yamaha case which is the cheapest of the three:

The Artley-style plastic cases are fairly compact and inexpensive: http://www.wwbw.com/Replacement-Cases-Plastic-Clarinet-Case-471811-i1411890.wwbw

I would vote for the ingle pochette case or the Yamaha student case if you want to go cheaper

The Yamaha case my friend had with her YCL 450 (or was it 650?) was the smallest case i've ever seen.
Here's how i transport my eefer when i'm flying- wrap it in bubble wrap and slide it into a plastic tube (with stoppers at each end). I put the bell in a cloth bag and carry it separately. This plastic tube fits into the outer pocket of my double case cover (Olathe), and if i think it's worth it i can actually put the empty eefer case into my checked on luggage (though i usually don't bother).

I got a ProTec double case shortly after it was introduced. I don't know about their current models, but mine is very loosely fitted and allows the joints to rattle around. You'll need to cut strips of foam or bubble wrap to tuck around the joints for safety.

There is the clarinet part of the old Selmer Tray Pack Case although I understand the bell of a Buffet will not fit.

I've used bubble wrap, but with a hiking sock in place of the duct tape, several times.
