 Hello there

Hello I'm new to the forum.

I have just bought a Corton clarinet from ebay and, yes... I wish I had seen this forum first.

anyhow, I am a complete novice to this intrument and, Have a couple of questions. Firstly what reeds do I need and, could anyone recommend a good beginners guide to learning it. For years I have been mesmorised by it's sound but, now I wish to truly learn to play.

In addition, are there any historical resources on the Corton so I could understand alittle more about it's inner working and how to care for it.

Ok, any help would be great.

Thanks

Venus

The Search feature on this forum brings up some of these discussions about Corton clarinets:

I've overhauled two Corton clarinets so far, and they were roughly comparable to today's Amati 211 model. Those I "did" had a nice tone and the keywork was "right" - reasonably stiff, unobtrusive, but probably nothing you'd remember a life long. I would say it's a "good enough" instrument to learn on or to double on.

As far as I understand, these clarinets have been imported under various brand/model names, including Boosey & Hawkes 400, La Fleur and some others.

Now, do yourself the favour and get a good mouthpiece for it; there are a number of budget priced mouthpieces that will be a vast improvement over nearly any stock mouthpiece, especially those that are likely to come with off-brand instruments. Hite Première, Fobes Debut, Behn Ouverture are some I own and can recommend. Buy some reeds of various strenghts, around a #2.5 to start on. Find a store that sells single reeds, you might have to experiment a bit till you find "your" strength.

Then - I urge you to find a teacher. Can be a pro, can be a music student, can be a clarinetist from the local band - just find someone who does the "initiation rites" with you. Nothing worse than learning things the wrong way and to struggle unnecessarily with problems a seasoned player can help you solve in a couple of minutes.

Emma Johnson has a nice series of video lessons for beginners on the clarinet. It's quite inexpensive...why not give it a try.

Good suggestion,Geezer, and since Venus is in or near London quite appropriate for her. Nothing like learning from the Masters.
