 Scratches in the interior
Author: Greg_Greece

Hello people,

recently i have started overhauling a nice old french albert system clarinet. I have noticed that the interior is full of scratches. The first thing that came on my mind is that these scratches was caused by the brush that the previous owner maybe was using. Are there any other possible explanations? Also, is there a need to remove these scratches or can i leave it as is?

Thanks!

It depends if you want it to be pretty or play as originally designed. Removing scratches may change the bore, maybe for the better or for the worse.

It doesn't matter if the issue is just aesthetic, since the scratches are not visivle..

Maybe you can share a picture?
One scratch (or two) are much too small to influence the acoustics in any noticeable way.

However, many scratches can make the bore essentially larger. That may be noticeable. But polishing means essentially removal of all material between the scratches which certainly makes the bore wider.

With an old instrument the question whether the diameter of the bore is still circular along the whole length may be more important. An oval bore is problematic.

The wood shrinks over time - so the bore will be smaller than originally intended. Have someone who is experienced have a look and measure it.

Then work as needed.

Thanks for your replies.

Here are two photos one from the upper part and one of the lower. Would like to hear your thoughts.

It doesn't look pretty, but I've seen school instruments much worse that still played well. You could try oiling the bore a few times and then, if the scratches are still visible, swab the bore with a hard wax polish. This won't change the bore dimensions appreciably. If the scratches don't bother you too much then just play it and forget about them.
