Any news on how Anthony McGill did today in Chicago?

There is a post on the "Clarinet Jobs" Facebook group that says McGill did not advance today, and only Ricardo is left.
I have no way to know if this was a reliable source. But someone who claimed to know posted it on facebook... Surely someone here will have details!

Well, that source was the same person who started this thread, so that's kind of funny by itself.
I'm sure we'll find out soon enough

Wasn't Rusinek also supposed to audition yesterday?
I can't keep track anymore...

Yes, I did post that. A few hours after posting here, I found out for sure from that reliable source. I then posted on the Clarinet Jobs page and didn't update on here. Sorry for the delay.

Blake, where is the Clarinet Jobs sight located?
I must say I'm not surprised about Ricardo, he's still my favorite student, I wonder why? Though there are several that I am very found of, present and past. As fantastic as he is though, I am surprised that some of the others did not move up into the finals but Ricardo is an exception. ESP

Ed Palanker -
What's your take on why Ricardo might want to leave Philadelphia for Chicago? It's hard to imagine a better job than Philly, at least in the long term, whatever their problems with Eschenbach.

Ken, I have no idea. I'm sure he has his reasons. I was surprised too, thinking Philly was an ideal job but I'm me and he's Ricardo. If he accepts the job maybe he'll tell me but right now it's anyone’s guess. I could only speculate and I won't do that on an opened forum. That would leave Philly opened though, any takers to follow in his footsteps? ESP

After June 2009, Drucker should be available ...GBK

Ed,
It's part of www.facebook.com
Once you create a membership on there (it's free) then you can add groups. It's really quite insightful...James Zimmerman keeps it very up to date with auditions and recaps of what happened at each audition.

Thanks Blake, I'll check it out.
GBK mentioned that Drucker would be available. He could probably go another few years but probably won't want to move. ESP

David McGill (the bassoonist) left the Cleveland Orchestra for the Chicago Symphony a few years ago, but not before there was a bidding war between the orchestras which increased his pay considerably...

When i was at CCM in the late 1990s the stories i heard about his days as a student all suggested that he did indeed practise like crazy.

Morales work habit:
I can tell you as one of his former teachers and friend that it's both. He's a natural talent but he practiced, and still does, like mad. He's a perfectionist and works until he gets it the way he wants over and over again. I tell my students to go over a passage until they can play it four times perfect in a row, he said at a master class, one hundred times. That may be an exaggeration, but probably not by much for him. Every player that I have known that is a "great" player, also practiced a great deal. ESP

More info from the very informative "Clarinet Jobs" on Facebook:
Ricardo will be playing 2 concerts with the CSO next Monday and Tuesday at Carnegie Hall. James even listed the program on the facebook group- he gets all the scoop!

Clarinetist Jen Moren who was an adult student of mine sat 2nd chair to Ricardo in Indiana All-State Band and she told me that he was a monster even back in High School. The level difference was canyon sized.

Wow...tickets are still available for those concerts next week. That would be something to see...like watching somebody take an audition. My only question is...if Morales is the only person who they heard that was qualified, what happens if he says no when they offer? Do they go back to some of the people who weren't qualified before? (or if he's going to play with them in NY, does that mean he's already tentatively accepted?...I obviously never had to deal with such things in my audition career)

They would have no problem finding somebody to play while they prepare another audition. Yeh would probably fill in Combs shoes for most of the concerts...

I find it most interesting that many of these finalists that I have seen listed on this site already have GREAT jobs. I wonder how many of them are taking the audition hoping to take the position or just to negotiate new contracts within their current ensemble.
Just out of curiosity, what percentage of players get to negotiate their own contacts above the orchestra's CBA pay? I know most concertmasters negotiate their own contracts. Is this mostly limited to only the most prestigious ensembles?

Great jobs but not the CSO Principal job.
There is a difference, though for Ricardo not sure what that would be. For the others it is a pay raise and a status raise.
I doubt that a lot of auditions are taken for a contract change.
Personally I think that it was really shortsighted for them to have only qualified one player (even though I love Ricardo's playing). Yeh and Smith are both really wonderful players and would have done a great job at principal too.

Good luck with the LSO application. I hope it goes well for you. Playing in a section headed up by Marriner would be pretty inspirational.

I think the people really needing some props, are Mr. Andrews, and one of my personal favorite players, Eugene Mondie, who i've thankfully and luckily had the chance to play with on occasion. For me, Eugene's playing embodies the control, tonal beauty, and musical sophistication that i know i'm striving for.
These two players actually advanced from the cattle call prelim! This prelim including principal players from many of the TOP TOP orchs. I think that is a fantastic accomplishment.

Absolutely, I didn't mention them as possibly there could be a "taste difference" from the CSO members, but for current CSO members who are great players, that just didn't make sense.....

Hey, my friends, it's ALWAYS about $$$.
Any lateral move, example: Philly to CSO, is about money.
Every great player I've ever spoken to about a "move," mentions the money issue.
Philly and CSO are both great Orchestras, which of the two pays the Principal Clarinet chair more???
Any comments?

Back when Burt Hara made Phila. they went on stike for having below the big 5 pay.
So Chicago would pay more I'd bet, but as a % it wouldn't be that much more - maybe 10% or so.
Back in the 90's there was an article about the strike and they included some players salaries and compared them to other orchestras with $ figures.

So there's no break for him at all with running back and forth to NYC for that Chicago concert.

A friend of mine who is a close friend of one of the Phila Orch's star principal players (who just happens to be listed on Guidestar as one of the highest paid employees of the Phila Orch Assn) told me that his friend was offered the principal xxxxxxx job in Philly conditional that he would not seek employment in the Chicago Symphony. His reply was "OK, but it will cost you!" Apparently the Philly management was willing to shell out in order not to let him slip away to a rival organization.
Sort of reminds one of the Yankees and Red Sox, doesn't it!

Ricardo is playing the Monday concert (Debussy) w/ CSO - not Tuesday if anyone was going to go to it.
I just heard him play the Mozart Quintet with the Juilliard St. Qt. (it was great).

Which pays more?
After the Met, according to a recent thread on a string bulletin board I ran across, the Philadelphia Orchestra is currently the highest paid. Individual section leaders, however, negotiate their own salaries. According to Guidestar, the highest paid woodwind player at Chicago (and the only woodwind player among the 5 highest paid employees reported in their most recently published 990) was the principal oboist. After adjusting the reported salaries for contributions to employee benefit plans and deferred compensation, his salary was about the same as Ricardo Morales' salary (which was among the 5 highest in Philadelphia, but not the highest woodwind). Because of a lag in reporting, however, the 990's are a year or two old.
I would expect that salary compression is the same sort of issue in orchestras that it is in universities so it doesn't surprise me that Larry Combs is paid less than the more recently hired oboe player (and oboists appear to be paid more than clarinetists, in general) -- and it won't surprise me if the next principal clarinetist makes (perhaps considerably) more than Mr. Combs.
Best regards,
jnk

Speaking of that oboist- I can't help but add- I had the pleasure of hearing him perform Mozart's oboe concerto when I went to a CSO concert in December.
It was delicious. He deserves EVERY penny.
