I remember the saying that I heard here about taking all your mouthpieces and putting them in a box. Blindfold yourself, pick one up, and throw the rest away.
I am now a subscriber to that theory of thought.
Reason being is that I just (on a whim) ordered a fourth MP. I like my Gigliotti P refaced by Dave Spiegelthal. I like my Greg Smith. I like my IDEAL MP refaced by Walter Grabner. And I ordered (and was pleasantly surprised) with a Pomarico MP. And I (over the past week and a half or so) have been floating back and forth with playing each one to see which one I like the best.
I can't decide. They all sound the same to me, with very slight differences. So I figure I'll just 'pick one' and let the rest be backups.

PS - I attribute this to also finding "my sound". People also say that you'll sound the same pretty much no matter what mp you have, and I think I sound pretty similar on them all. So all I need to work on now (a LOT of work I might add) is my technique.

I agree with you... some mps I use different reeds and stuff but, after you get used to a piece it sounds basically the same as any other one

FYI, I figured I'd go with the pomarico. Cause it looks cool and will the facing will never wear.
I'll just have to be VERY careful with it . . . .

I agree - I sound similar on whatever I play. It's just about finding the one with the feel I like.

I have no advice for you sfalexi but:
After a 20 yr. break in playing, I came back last year to my Wells being "shot" so I've had a serious mpc dilema. Tried 7 mpc's and settled on the Pyne Bel Canto. Great sound but just average response.
I finally did two things that helped tremendously. 1). I talked to Mike Lomax.....he sent 3 mpcs for me to try. I found a delightful sound AND response on the Elite A1G. 2). I finally had my Wells refaced by Walter Grabner and it came back playing like a charm too.
SSSOOOOO, Now I'm in that same boat as you are, sfalexi, so to speak. It's kind of like when I was young and having two great guys to choose from for the same dance. What's a girl to do?? I'm driving my brass playing family crazy making them listen to the subtle differences in the two mpc's. I love it!!! I don't want to throw any of them overboard though. The mpcs, or my family. Ha!
Sfalexi, I also love your quote. My sons play baseball and they are gamers, They really don't care who wins...They just want to play the game.

So you know EXACTLY what I'm going through. It sure is rough. I don't have access to any musical people to help me test out mine though. Consider yourself lucky in THAT respect!
