Interesting article.
About the necessary skills, according to a pro doubler I played with recently, here in Seattle to be a first call pit band player you basically have to be perfect, no mistakes or you'll go down in the rankings.

I found this article a year ago or more. Found it very interesting, and now know why I would have never made it in the LA studios. My respect for guys like Dan Higgins, Gary Foster and Gene Cipriano have increased tenfold since reading this.
I think to be a first call musician on any instrument, in any major city environment, you must be able to read the music put in front of you nearly perfect the first time. This especially applies to markets like LA and NY, but probably Chicago and other cities too.
