About six months ago I sold my gouging machines and started to rely on my school’s old Graf machine. After re-setting the gouger up and sharpening the blade I got a decent gouge out of the machine. Fast-forward a few months to the end of spring term, I gouged a bunch of cane on the machine to last me through the summer. However, the results of the gouge have turned sour. I make 99% of the adjustments to my reeds based solely on the crow (lips on thread). I have made about 15 reeds or so with this last batch of gouged cane and all of my reeds squeal and chirp wildly instead of producing a nice, uniform crow. Because of this I believe my scrape is not to blame. Since this is a shared gouging machine, I am fairly certain someone jostled it and knocked it out of adjustment. Is this problem characteristic of an unbalanced gouge? (I would check the dimensions of the gouge but I left my micrometer in our reed-room at school)
If my woes are a result of a defective gouge can anyone recommend a good resource for quality, consistent gouged cane?
