Now that I am back in Oz, I am about to embark on making reeds for the local students (who only have access to either expensive hand finished reeds or machine-made RSOs - reed shaped objects) and teaching reedmaking. I will be making short-scrape reeds in keeping with the local environment.

I have no problems making reeds for older and more proficient students and players, but in making reeds for beginners, how do I test them and know what to look for? In theory, they would be too soft and free-blowing for me, so how do I know if they are 'good'?

I hope this question makes sense! I am sure that the answers would be similar no matter the type of reed.
