Working on reeds on the gig
Author: Jaysne

I played clarinet in an orchestra over the weekend. Just before the second half of the show began, we were waiting for the oboe player to give us the "A." Nothing came. One of the violin players called over to him, but he had his head down and was feverishly working on a reed. Other people called out to him--with escalating degrees of panic and annoyance in their voices--but he ignored them all. Finally he finished his reed, and gave us the all-important A.

I recall a pit gig I played several years ago where the oboe/EH player brought a small table (complete with tablecloth) and reed tools into the pit so he could work on his reeds between the numbers.

I play some oboe, but have not learned how to make reeds yet. I basically have had my teacher adjust my reeds for me, and then left it at that.

My question is, do some oboe players take this reed stuff too far? I mean, working on the reed you're playing in the middle of a gig? Is that really necessary?
