I saw the MET production of Hansel and Gretel at a local theater today and it was really really neat. My friend whose been to the MET a few times thought it was better than the MET in person due to the detail you see of the staging and the acting. Though it doesn't sound "live". The imagery detail was AMAZING.
A really cool thing was that while the orchestra played alone with no action on the stage the cameras zoomed into the orchestra moving around to different players giving you very detailed views of principal players especially when they have prominent lines... like oboe. Elaine Douvas looked very elegant, played very beautifully, and had a lot of camera time. You have not seen such embouchure / reed playing detail than can be seen in HD (I think she only had 5mm of reed showing between lip and thread).
And you lurking clarinetists would have loved the equipment close ups <g>.
The bad thing about it is that since it's being transmitted digitally you can experience break ups in transmission. The first half of the show was flawless, but when intermission ended there was some sporadic audio break that showed up from time to for at least 10-20 minutes. Thankfully it stopped and it was a pleasant experience overall.
[edit: I should probably clarify that there wasn't 10-20 minutes of silence, but 1-2 seconds of silence randomly occurring in a 10-20 minute period]
