1. Do a little reading about Weber and the time period this work was written in. (historically and as related to the clarinet)
(The latest issue of <i>The Clarinet</i> has a master class article on the 1st movement)

2. Listen to this, and other clarinet works by Weber.

3. Find 2 or 3 artists whose interpretation and style you find appealing. What qualities do they have that you admire?

Follow those 3 steps, and then make the piece your own.

Jonathon -

There's an exceptionally good article on Weber, including a lot on Concerto # 1, in the new issue of the Clarinet magazine that came out this week. Essential reading. There was also a master class on Concerto # 1 in the previous issue. See also http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=89892&t=89828.

The things I said about the Concertino also apply to Concerto # 1 -- the operatic style, etc. You might also look at what I wrote about Concerto # 2 at http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=2985&t=2883.

You can learn a lot from a good recording. See http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=45252&t=45149.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
