Okay..

Most of you probably have watched in awe the news and some possibly have first hand accounts. I'm a high school senior - I live about an hour from the NYC. My school was closed today.... This is such a tragity.. beyond words, you don't know how upset i am.

I'm auditioing for colleges in December and I wonder.. is it even worth looking at the city schools. How safe is it ? I mean.. who can tell what might hapen in a month..a year.. ? I mean I love NYC, and it has some wonderful music schools.. but how safe is it.. should I not audition for MSM, Mannes, Juilliard, NYU...

It's pretty sad when you have to worry about saftey more so then the quality of an education.. What is this world coming to ?

Laurie,

What we have seen is a terrible, terrible tragedy. Prayers go out to all the victims, their families and friends. Nobody's life in America will be quite the same from here on.

However, the more we let these acts of war affect our DAILY lives, the greater the satisfaction of the B****rds that perpetrated this crime on our country. In other words, they win!

My suggestion: be aware of what's going on around you, but don't let what has happened defeat your desires for an excellent education, and a bright future. Explore all the schools, including the ones in the city, and find the one that will provide for your future in the best way possible.

America will prevail over these criminals! Throughout history, those countries and individuals that underestimate the will of the American people have been properly vanquished. Every day, our lives are filled with risks; Driving in cars, walking across the street, even eating the foods we enjoy is not taken without risk. Enjoy your life, and do not let the terrorists of the world win out.

Kevin

Laurie, those of us watching from a distance cannot possibly know what you are going through. Reach out to your neighbors, they know you and the city.

Your family and congregation should be a source of comfort in your trials.

You may wish to contact Ken Shaw, a fellow Sneezer, who works downtown about your long-term concerns over safety. (Only a fool would not worry.)

My only admonition would be to hold your dreams closely.
Don't let these animals drive you into hiding.
Be heard, make music.

I work in central London. We have lived with the terrorist activities of the IRA for many years. In 1993 they bombed our then tallest tower. It did not fall down, and there was nothing like the loss of life as occured this week in New York, but the building was out of action for a long while. That was just one of several bombs, including ones on busses etc. which had the potential of striking at several innocent people and killing or maiming them. Even though there is supposed to be a ceasefire, it was only a few weeks ago that a bomb went off in west London, and we are having to brace ourselves for some more of this disgusting activity. The security measures are so pervasive that we have become used to them as though they seemed normal.

As said above, this does not compare with what happened this week, but on the other hand it has been going on for a very long time indeed.

I cannot stress too much that it is vital for everyone to carry on their lives as normal. You have the individual right to look after your own safety, but if people generally followed your suggestion then the terrorists will have won their battle immediately. Terrorism cannot be blitzed. It must always be made clear that it does not work in breaking the spirit of the ordinary man in the street. That will defeat terrorism. The other things that do help are serious levels of security action, with everyone cheerfully accepting the need for it, and targeted strikes against terrorist enclaves, but only once the fullest consequences have been thought through. But these cannot prevail if the population so terrorised runs scared. My advice is to go to New York if you would have done. You will very likely survive the experience, and if not, are about as likely to die crossing the street or in a fire on the underground rail system, as by a strike from terrorists.

I wouldn't worry about New York. I work in midtown and went into work yesterday 9Wednesday) and today. I feel safe.

Laurie,

I have a bunch of friends who are currently going to school in NYC, and saw all of the action take place from their dorm room windows. they're a bit shaken up, but they're fine. Nothing happened to them, and I think they are beginning to return to what they can try and call a "normal" life again. I don't think you should let all this change your life...we're strong, we're americans. we can get through this.

Laurie, because we're all human, everyone, at various points in their lives, feels fear. Even those who are deemed "courageous" feel this emotion but have "learned" how to go forward while feeling the effects of fear.
You have received some excellent advice in the above postings.
What could I possibly add??? Life is very unpredictable. You may choose a so called "safer" location only to have a serious "mishap" take place there!!!
You said that you "love NYC" and that it has "wonderful music schools". I sense that you already know what the answer is.
Follow your dreams...go for the best.
I sense that you just needed some reassurance and hopefully you've received enough to continue forward with your plans.
If you don't do the try-outs in NYC, you may wind up later on feeling very sorry that you didn't.
I hope this helps. Dan
