 Help needed fixing a barrel
Author: m1964

Hello,
I had received great help from this board participants, now need another advice.
I have a spare barrel in which the MP socket is too large and so my MP is loose.
If I installed an extra thick MP cork, I would no longer be able to use my other barrels.

Is there any way to build up the inner wall of the socket, possibly with superglue?
Thanks

I think superglue is too thin unless you use the gel type. I think JB Weld would be better. Here is how I make fits tighter on sax mouthpiece shanks.

Hi,
Players choice but...
I would not recommend super glue for this, although it has other applications.
This is very tough stuff. There are superglue solvents but they slowly soften the glue. Totally agree with above. you will at best have a very poor surface.

Although not ideal in a pinch I have glued a thin layer of plastic on the inside using a heat sensitive glue such as shellac and used a cork to hold it in place until it dries.

The other option electrical tape around the tenon.

The upmarket answer would be have a nickel tenon insert fitted.

There are a number of other options, please don't use superglue...

I have a barrel somewhere made by Jimmy Yan. The mouthpiece socket on that had been made too large, and I believe the socket was lined with thin layers of nail varnish. If I can find it tomorrow I'll see if it's possible to photograph the tenon, it worked perfectly fine for several years use.

Forgive me, but I'd like to disagree with some of the above comments. I have used superglue with complete success in reducing the dimensions of barrel sockets in a number of cases. I find it quite a flexible mechanism, since the glue takes a while to harden - so you have plenty of time to spread it smoothly over the required area (I use the tip of a small screwdriver to do this, but a little strip of cardboard also works fine). Superglue is also viscous enough that small amounts stay where they are put, especially if you rotate the barrel for a minute or so after applying the glue. When it's set, you can smooth the surface with fine sandpaper, although this is hardly required. This method has a number of virtues: you can apply very small amounts and build up to the required dimensions; you can apply just where needed (which is often at the base of the socket: if a mouthpiece is rocking, you don't need to reduce the whole socket dimension); and finally, once it is lightly sanded and greased, you can't see that anything has been done, as the surface just looks black.

I've used superglue with success for this. Use the liquid glues, not the gel and apply it using a fine paintbrush. This will enable you to build it layer by layer until you get to where you need to be.

Thanks a lot to everyone- I may try the superglue; the barrel is a spare one, I just want to get an idea how it plays.

It came with a clarinet I bought. I got a replacement barrel for it and already sold that instrument but never tried its barrel.

I like the sound of Toni F's method. The only thoughts I would add to that are on the importance of removing all traces of cork grease from the socket beforehand, and having a number of artist's brushes for building up coats allowing for proper drying time in between. Superglue does also sand very well if necessary , although it will also crumble off the wood if there is poor adherence.(from grease or oil in the wood ... so I would clean the socket VERY thoroughly with acetone for starters).

The reason nail polish has been used for decades for this type of work (and filling in tone holes etc) is that they also sell "nail polish remover" which gets it off pretty easily should you ever need that. I suppose there must be something you can smear on to help remove superglue... right? They sell "superglue remover"?

Acetone removes superglue, according to Google.

I got the same Google answer once when I got superglue on a T-shirt, but acetone didn't dissolve/remove any of it (the glue was hardened). In case superglue on a hard surface is different, I just tried rubbing a cloth with acetone on a pair of headphones with some superglue leftovers on hard plastic. A thin, soft coating on that plastic got off, but none of the superglue.

Someone else with experience how to remove hardened superglue from a wooden of plastic clarinet body? If that body was stained, did the stain get off as well (wouldn't matter inside a socket, of course)?
