Hi,
I'm an intermediate/advanced student (or at least I consider myself like that :-) )
that played/studied for nearly 10 years.
At the moment I'm using the Buffet Prodige and I'm on the search of upscale my game to an intermediate/semi-professional one.
I narrowed down the list to Buffet E13 and Yamaha YCL650 (open to any other suggestions). What I'm looking is a good intermediate as close as professional as possible to make the change worth it.
I would like to know your thoughts as I couldn't see a comparison like this one anywhere else, only close one was YCL650 vs R13 as Yamaha classify it as professional.
I would love to go for a Buffet R13 but unfortunately that's out of my budget as this is more a hobby.

For €1500 you should be able to get a R13 or RC; you probably need to search the shops around you.
I see many nice looking R13s on eBay but a lot of times the description may not be true, so I would recommend to search the repair shops for used R13, or equivalent Yamaha or Selmer.
Tell us where you are located and you may get a few recommendations.
If you are somewhat serious about playing, I would search for a pro model, not intermediate.

About a year ago, I also tried the E13 and the 650 side by side. I went for the Yamaha, because it’s quite free blowing and has a bright, cheery sound that I like. I also like the build quality.
However, I went shopping for a professional clarinet recently, and tried some Buffets, one Yamaha and some Selmer. It appears my taste has changed, and today I might prefer the Buffet over the Yamaha because of a mellower sound.
What I’m trying to say is: you can’t predict what you will like more without trying them side by side. Nobody can tell you what you will prefer. So if you have an opportunity to try them both, do that. Any other advice comes down to preference of the advisor, and that may or may not be the same as yours.

I’m serious about playing but it won’t be more than a hobby, but I agree on trying getting a professional rather than an intermediate if possible.
Thanks, will look for a good used R13 to see what’s around.
According to other paces I’ve seen, the Yamaha equivalent is the YCL-650, that’s why I put it on my list.

Thanks, I’m not quite looking for a professional one at the moment or at least not new as that will be out of my budget.
I agree that will need to try them to be sure, but I had the same feeling about the Yamaha at the moment (being the one I like a little bit more), will try to get my hands on some of them
