I watched this band playing at the London Proms on TV last night, and was interested in the set up of the principal clarinet. He had an instrument that seemed to have several different hues of brown, and no silver tenon rings (does that mean it may be a Rossi?). He also used a sling, which seems a little unusual for a standard clarinet.
It all sounded very nice. A little conservative for my taste, but very pleasant. He seemed to like to bounce up and down in his seat which I would not have thought was conducive to good control, but needless to say I could detect no problems in the sound (through my very basic TV speaker).
Can anyone tell me anything about him and the instruments etc.?
Thanks

Probably Ricardo Morales.
If you have a chance to hear him in a chamber setting, his approach may be different (although a subtle distinction)... he has such beautiful phrasing.
There is more tackle on his horn than most oboes... LOTS of extra resonance holes added to the lower section and a multiple resonance (aka octave) key vents up top.
The horn I saw him playing (in 2002) was a Selmer with carbon fiber rings.
In my opinion, this guy would sound great playing a garden hose.

It was Ricardo Morales - definitely with a Selmer Recital (standard keywork + LH Eb lever) with Backun bell - though he was mostly using a rosewood barrel with metal rings for the Tchaikovsky 5th and used one without rings for a bit (in the 2nd mvmt) which he was seen removing to go back to the one with metal rings.
And a BG lig and sling.
Does this mean he no longer plays Leblancs, or does he chop and change?

The opinions I express are my own.
