Which mouthpieces with Austrian facings work together with which Reform Boehm or French bore instruments concerning intonation?
A Playeasy A' with an Austrian facing but German bore (narrrower than the Austrian) works very well on my Wurlitzer RB A-clarinet, but not on the B-clarinet.
On the A-clarinet the general tuning level for an a=442 is fine with both barrels (55,5 mm for a cold instrument and 57 mm for a warm one) and the internal tuning is similar as with Wurlitzer German bore mouthpieces.
On the Bb-clarinet however, I have the same kind of problems as with the A' mouthpiece with the larger Austrian bore - mainly general flatness in the first register and especially with the left hand notes (the flattest note is the middle line Bb). Also altissimo gets sharp, but that can be handled by keeping the voicing and pressure against the reed as in lower registers.
I'm keen on the Austrian facings since they give me the sound I'm after, soft and full (some may call it "dark" and still others "dull" :-)).
The few large bore Austrian system clarinets that I've tried, together with Austrian mouthpieces, gives me the same kind of problems with intonation as with Austrian mouthpieces on Reform Boehm instruments. It seems to me however, that much of the difference in sound comes from the facing of the mouthpiece rather than the large bore clarinet itself.
